Rio+20's
sustainable development goals should reflect today's world

The
advantages of Global Goals such as the Millennium Development Goals is that
they help
focus leaders' attention and galvanize aid.
However, after 2015 when most of the MDGs expire there is a need to bring
together development and environment into a single set of targets.
But
we have to take note of the political and economic context that will shape
any decision and ensure that the indicators are not just illusionary.
The
context today is the reverse for the creation of the MDGs. Rich countries are in recession, there is
no prospect of European leadership, and many of the poor counties are now
re-classified as middle income.
Aid
following a banking crisis typically free falls and will not return to its
previous level for 15 years.
Therefore
we need to aim for low cost measures

Development assistance produces results but too little information about development assistance is available and there is a lack of transparency. Developing countries do not always know how much aid is invested in their country, how that money is spent or what results it achieves.
